As the name suggests, the album &quot;en casa veglia&quot; was created in an old house in the village of Gün. The former farmhouse is surrounded by picturesque landscapes, unspoilt nature, mountains, streams, forests and meadows. With your eyes closed, the surroundings are no less intoxicating. If you listen instead of just looking, you will be rewarded with a vast variety of sounds. This modern jazz quartet, led by double bass player Vito Cadonau, does not discriminate against &quot;noise&quot; as such, but appreciates and uses it as a musical treasure. After all, the Romansh word &quot;ramur&quot; means nothing less than &quot;noise&quot;.

With various Korean instruments (Daegeum, Saenghwang, Ajaeng, Gayageum and Korean percussion) and powerful vocals based on folk traditions, ADG7 creates a blend of Korean pop and funk with cheerful and humorous elements. The ensemble consists of six musicians and three powerhouse folk singers. Their repertoire is influenced by rituals of shamanistic music (Gut) and the Korean folk song tradition (Minyo) from the Hwanghae region (now a western province in North Korea). ADG7 was formed in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea&#x27;s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Their music expresses the meaning of liberation and South Korea&#x27;s desire for reunification. ADG7 has received numerous awards and performed at international festivals including WOMEX 2019, Global FEST 2020, Glastonbury and Roskilde.

Simon Grab – Videoex im Walcheturm

Fractura is a transdisciplinary investigation that originates from the sound world of the artist Simon Grab. It explores the creation of a collapsed ecosystem through changes, discontinuities and ruptures. The piece is inspired by the destruction of ecosystems caused by the extractivist capitalist system, specifically focusing on the oil extraction process called Fracking. This method, illegal in many countries worldwide, is currently in use in Argentina, particularly in the Vaca Muerta formation located in the province of Neuquén. It has direct effects on biota and the population, causing precarious living conditions immersed in these new anthropogenic landscapes. Through Simon’s raw sounds, Fractura creates a dystopia, a space where a rupture occurs in the natural balance, in temporal frameworks, a system failure opening an energetic channel to a liminal space where life becomes toxic. A creature explores this new space, either framed by the screen or projecting itself within it. The combination of these diverse materialities translates into a choreography of pulsating forces struggling between connection and disconnection, synchrony and desynchronization, creating the complexity and dynamism of this new world. Abate Berihun & Addis Ken Project

Abate Berihun is a prolific saxophonist, composer and vocalist, a prominent Ethiopian musicians, who has toured and collaborated with musical giants such as Mulatu Astatke, Mahmoud Ahmed and Gigi. He is also the founder and leader of influential afro-jazz and ethnic ensembles “Tezeta”, “Ras Dashen” and “Kuluma”. Addis Ken – አዲስ ቀን (“New Day” in Amharic) – is the new musical project of Abate Berihun and pianist Roy Mor, and it is all about soulful groove, spiritual search and heartfelt blues. Along with bassist David Michaeli and drummer Amir Bar Akiva, the group brings to the stage original music that fuses Jewish-Ethiopian soul music and prayers passed through the generations with ageless spiritual and mysterious texts. The result is “a thrilling encounter between ancient Ethiopian traditions and the legacy of a modern jazz ensemble, steeped in musical adventurousness, deep groove, and the spirit of the blues.” The group has performed internationally in clubs and festivals in Denmark, Panama and Canada, as well as at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat and at the international Jerusalem Jazz Festival; and in 2020, they won the Israeli Ministry of Culture’s highest artistic grant. The Grammy-nominated vocals of this French-born singer shine with elegance and clarity, energetic optimism and razor-sharp scat. Cyrille Aimée has lived a life of improvisation: As a young woman, she sang in traveller people&#x27;s camps in her homeland and on street corners across Europe; today, she delights audiences at the world&#x27;s most prestigious jazz festivals and performs on Broadway. Her latest album &#x27;à Fleur de Peau&#x27;, which she will be presenting on this tour will be released on 8th March 2024.

What a pleasure to see a band that has just formed! The trio&#x27;s first album has already been recorded and is just waiting to be released. We already know at least two of the musicians from other formations: Saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist Tamar Osborn was the leader of the band Collocutor, Eddie Wakili-Hicks was the drummer and producer of Sons of Kemet and Wojtek Mazolewski is a celebrated bassist from Poland. Together they create a very unique sound, with quiet soundscapes evolving into groovy and extremely powerful passages.

Moods is taking this as an opportunity to invite intrepid label boss DJ Pete On the Corner to host a quarterly residency. Nolan Quinn Quintet

Melodious and accessible: jazz trumpeter Nolan Quinn from Ticino plays catchy melodies and brings out the most diverse tone colours from the trumpet, whereby his sound never loses its warmth and softness. The Nolan Quinn Quintet plays jazz that sometimes takes a trip to hard bop, Broadway music or the blues. Simple compositions form the basis, which are further developed live by the improvisational power and spontaneity of the musicians around Nolan Quinn.  

José James presents 1978

José James is the epitome of modern jazz, but it almost came to nothing: The singer used to be an ardent supporter of hip-hop. It was only later that he worked his way through Nat King Cole to John Coltrane until he created his incomparable blend of jazz, soul, drum&#x27;n&#x27;bass and spoken word. Soulful trees are now growing on this soil, where the New York style chameleon with the fine voice can let off steam – and is difficult to capture!

Riff Cohen combines her Tunisian and Algerian heritage with her Israeli identity to create music that transcends cultural boundaries. With the release of her debut album A Paris (2010), which was created during an artist residency in the French capital, she laid the foundation for an international career that led to collaborations with Enrico Macias and Goran Bregović. She sings in Hebrew, Arabic, French and English; her music is characterized by Persian, Turkish, Iraqi, Moroccan, Algerian and Berber influences as well as elements of Israeli oriental music of the 90s. Riff Cohen uses the platform she is given as an artist to build a bridge between different cultures through music.

DJ Thomas Bohnet has been active as a DJ for 40 years. Mongolian singer Enji first came into contact with jazz at the Goethe-Institut in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. She later studied jazz singing in her adopted home of Munich, where she now also realized her new album Ulaan (2023). The reactions to the album were overwhelming: #1 in the Washington Post, Best Jazz Albums of 2023 in the New York Times and hhv-mag. This spring, singer Enji will be touring Europe for the first time as a trio with guitarist Paul Brändle and River Adomeit on double bass: sensitive chamber jazz that meets the folklore of Mongolia.

A double premiere! Irina Ungureanu and Anna Trauffer will be on stage together for the first time. And: Irina Ungureanu will also perform her own songs in Swiss German for the first time. Welcome to Agadez, the capital of Saharan rock! With her dynamic repertoire of hypnotic solos and sun-bleached melodies, Etran de L&#x27;Aïr has earned themself a permanent place in the guitar music of Agadez. While other Tuareg guitarists are oriented towards western rock, Etran de L&#x27;Aïr plays a pan-African style that is typical of their home town and quotes a variety of cultural influences: from northern Malian blues to Hausa bar bands to Congolese soukous. The music evokes the exuberance of a wedding in Agadez, with an overwhelming abundance of guitars, while simultaneous solos sweep over each other playfully and with restrained precision; powerful but never exuberant. The band Anna &amp; Stoffner with Membrez and Mantel captivates with a highly energetic interplay of virtuoso musicians and urgent, unsparing lyrics. Rapper Anna Frey and guitarist Flo Stoffner, with Vincent Membrez on synthesizers and Lukas Mantel on drums, develop an intensity that is hard to resist. «Less than little is nothing, but little is more than nothing, little makes a difference.» This band is not afraid of the void and does not cover it up, but faces it, follows it and thus develops its own language, with driving grooves, poppy melodies, free improvisation, idiosyncratic guitars and dark, engaging basses. Rapper Anna Frey moves over this musical diversity with her poetic lyrics. Sometimes in singsong, sometimes in harsh phrasing. Always in search of the immediate expression.

The four musicians, rooted in the Zurich jazz scene, have known each other for over 20 years and play together not only as permanent members of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, but also in a variety of other formations. The quartet, which was formed especially for the Carte Blanche Festival, offers its own material with melodious jazz and plenty of interplay. As co-leader of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, trumpeter and flugelhorn player Daniel Schenker is a central figure in the Zurich jazz scene. He has already recorded numerous albums (also in his own formation with American saxophonist Chris Cheek) and toured with musicians such as Kenny Werner, Joe Haider, George Gruntz and Bill Holman. The elegance of Paris meets the creativity of Zurich. Rafael Schilt and François Lana, two masters of their craft, compose their music together and let it shine on stage like stars in the night sky. Their music tells stories of love, loss and hope that flow directly from their hearts and touch the souls of their listeners. Rafael Schilt is as versatile as he is inspired - his compositions borrow elements from pop and modern dance music as well as from free contemporary improvisation - and his stage partners include Nils Wogram, Norbert Pfammatter, Colin Vallon, Bänz Oester and Kurz Rosenwinkel, to name but a few.

Imagine Fela Kuti jamming in an bar in a nameless, global metropolis with Martin Denny, but it is on glass harp… While this might sound like a sensationalist figment of an over-heated music journalist’s brain, it is not too far from what Os Barbapapas are able to achieve. The band from the music metropolis of Sao Paulo is named after the iconic but weird cartoon series from the 1970s. And the band members are just as amorphous and shapeshifting as the characters in the series: they learned gnawa in Morocco, have performed in circuses and built various instruments of their own. On their new album, appropriately named Enigma, the original seed of Os Barbapapas&#x27; global underground vibes comes to full bloom.

Moods Summer Special in der Barfussbar

Akutuk is a percussion technique from Cameroon: water is used as an instrument, played with bare hands and accompanied by singing. It is an exclusively female practice that is passed down from woman to woman over generations. The Akutuk Origins project aims to revive this almost lost cultural heritage and make it visible in public spaces. A hypnotic but surprisingly versatile sound that will unfold its full power in the wonderful setting of the Barfussbar. Supported by the Südkulturfonds. Band-it Weekend

Band-it enables young bands and musicians to present themselves to a larger audience and a jury under professional conditions. In June, they show their skills at six qualifications throughout the canton of Zurich. Indie rock, German pop, Balkan sound, singer/songwriter, hip hop and punk: since 1989, over 1600 bands from all musical genres have taken part in this Newcomer Band Festival. For many of these young talents, Band-it has been a launch pad to great success, such as Faber, Evelinn Trouble, Pablo Infernal and Sebass. Admission is free. What an anniversary! In the year of his 80th birthday, Marcos Valle is also celebrating sixty years on stage. The Brazilian composer, producer, songwriter and musician belongs to the second generation of bossa nova and his 1998 album Nova Bossa Nova became a model for Brazilian electro and contemporary Brazilian jazz. Brushy One String

One man, one guitar, one string: that&#x27;s enough for the Jamaican singer to create an entire musical universe. Since his portraits in the award-winning film documentaries RiseUp and The King of One String, thousands of amazed listeners have succumbed to the charm of his songs; whether he is performing unplugged at a market in Jamaica, at New Orleans &amp; Heritage or at Global Fest in New York in front of a large audience. With a unique personality and his raw yet grandiose style, he immediately captivates the audience and skillfully uses his charismatic baritone voice combined with hypnotic, bouncy grooves on his one-string acoustic guitar.

Amsterdam Klezmer Band

The name says it all: the Amsterdam Klezmer Band plays klezmer and adds a pinch of jazz, Balkan or gypsy to the mix. The band started out as a group of street musicians in 1996 and has played countless live shows since then. In February 2024, they released their twentieth album &quot;Bomba Pop&quot;, which was produced by Ulf Lindemann aka Dunkelbunt. The sound on it is as we know it and yet it is so much more: beats that range from dub to hip-hop to dance music also like to sneak in. A danceable journey around the world!

Banjo

La Sonora Mazurén

La Sonora Mazurén are the latest representatives of Bogotá&#x27;s lively alternative music scene. The seven musicians are influenced by traditional rhythms and sounds from Ecuador, Colombia and Peru and enrich them with synths and electric guitar. This is how they have developed their very own sound, which can be described as trippy cumbia, psychedelic chicha or African fuzz. A must for lovers of bands like the Meridian Brothers and for anyone curious to discover the new Tropsychedelica sound of Colombia.

Benin International Musical

The Benin International Musical combines traditional rhythms and songs from the voodoo culture with electronic melodies, trip-hop grooves, hip-hop and rock from Benin&#x27;s trendy club scene. With their project, the collective aims to revive the diverse musical heritage of their ancestors and make it accessible to a wide audience. The traditional voodoo culture, which was spread in the wake of slavery, may be unknown to many, but it laid the foundations for musical movements such as jazz, blues, salsa and hip-hop. A groovy homage to a rich cultural history!

Jasmine Myra

Jasmine Myra is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader from Leeds and is part of the city&#x27;s vibrant, creative and cross-genre music scene, which is bursting with young talent. Her euphoric and uplifting sound draws influences from Bonobo, Ólafur Arnalds and Kenny Wheeler, artists whose music shares an emotive quality that you can also hear in Myra’s own compositions.

Andrea Bignasca, a musician from the south of Switzerland with a warm and welcoming voice, has been playing his way into the hearts of an ever-growing audience over the past few years. Since the release of his debut album &quot;Gone&quot; in 2015, Andrea Bignasca has given over 200 concerts in Switzerland, performed at major Swiss festivals and supported artists such as Everlast, Morcheeba and Gregory Porter. The songwriter&#x27;s fourth album &quot;Stranger&quot; will be released in October 2024. It tells stories of creating and writing songs, of creating life, of fatherhood and love; and of the fears, doubts and joys that all these things bring.

Tonight with Jools Holland - the British music legend returns! The multi-talent became known in 1974 with the new wave formation Squeeze, and since 1992 he has hosted the successful music show &quot;Later... with Jools Holland&quot; on BBC, while also touring with his own boogie-woogie, R&#x27;n&#x27;B and pop program. He is always accompanied by a top-class line-up. This year he will be supported by the Jamaican R&#x27;n&#x27;B voice Ruby Turner.

The lower floor of the club is at ground level and accessible without steps. There is one accessible bathroom which can be used with a Eurokey. The bar is not accessible and is approximately 1.20 metres high.

Moods & jazzhane present

Back in 2009, their fresh rock/post-rock electronic sound, described as euphoric, holistic, spacey, and raucous quickly catapulted the Jordanian-Palestinian band from Amman to massive success; an artistic journey that saw them become one of the leading socially and politically outspoken bands reviving the Arab independent music scene. El Morabba3 broke cultural barriers and appealed to a generation of hunger-stricken fans living in an unstable and restless region, as they craved a new sound; one that expressed the thoughts, concerns, and anger of the people towards the realities they are living today. Today, Muhammad Abdulla and Basel Naouri live in Berlin, they have restructured the band and take El Morabba3&#x27;s earlier aesthetic evolution into a new direction. Departing from the raw post-rock energy of the first album and the polished instrumental/electronic fervor of the second, the artists have taken a deep dive into experimentation with electronic tunes and storytelling.

Yumi Ito, a Swiss singer with Polish-Japanese roots, moves effortlessly between genres and her roles as singer, pianist, composer and improviser. She has performed twice with the ZJO, and Ed Partyka is very much looking forward to arranging some of Yumi&#x27;s brand new compositions. The audience can expect an evening of unusual sounds, refreshing and inspiring moments – and surprises: As Yumi Ito&#x27;s music is conceived and composed for smaller ensembles, Ed Partyka&#x27;s big band arrangements open up new worlds of sound.

Malika Tirolien

From Guadeloupe, Grammy nominated vocalist, songwriter and producer Malika Tirolien is an explosive mix of creativity, dedication and genuineness. Her love, passion and respect for music can be felt in the sparkling authenticity of her performances in which her soaring voice immediately grabs your attention and her well-crafted compositions present effusive emotions through conscious and engaged lyrics. Montreal based, she has been garnering international attention for almost a decade, striking with her electrifying performance on “Iʼm not the one”, a prime track on the Grammy-winning album “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy that has been inspiring countless covers worldwide. Siselabonga

Siselabonga are back with a new EP called &#x27;In Stone&#x27;. This time, South African singer-songwriter Nongoma takes the mic as the group moves through a kaleidoscopic mix of acoustic and electronic sounds. The rhythmic foundation is West African to the core, with selected elements of hip-hop, soul, Afrobeats and electro-pop thrown in for good measure. Lively, sensual and transcendent. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Nubiyan Twist

Acclaimed by the press and critics, celebrated by fans, part of the crème de la crème of British jazz, Nubiyan Twist from Leeds bring together virtuoso musicians, experienced producers and inspired composers under the direction of Tom Excell. Together they create an unmistakable, infectious big band sound with influences from jazz, hip hop, Afrobeat, Latin, soul, reggae and dance music – a captivating, powerful musical experience.

Adi Oasis

Hailing from the French Caribbean and living in Brooklyn, Adi Oasis is currently taking the music world by storm. Since launching her solo career in 2018, she has performed with Anderson .Paak, Gregory Porter, JUNGLE, Masego, Thundercat, appeared at festivals such as the Newport Jazz Fest, Love Supreme or Montreux Jazz Festival and the stream of rave reviews just won&#x27;t dry up. On her debut album &quot;Lotus Glow&quot;, released in 2023, Adi Oasis combines her retro-futuristic signature sound, her soaring voice and her spectacular bass playing to create a very personal and political work that particularly reflects the reality of her life as a Black female immigrant in America. &quot;Lotus Glow represents the flower I&#x27;ve blossomed into, the artist I&#x27;ve worked on becoming all my life. The glow is where I am going next. It&#x27;s my destiny.&quot;

Nina Reiter MetaLogue

Album Release «evolving»

The newly formed 10-piece ensemble MetaLogue, led by singer Nina Reiter, is reviving the music of Lucerne composer Mani Planzer, who died in 1997 and was almost forgotten. As a musician, composer, organist, teacher, choirmaster and big band leader, Planzer had a decisive influence on the cultural landscape of Central Switzerland. He was awarded the Lucerne City Prize for Art and Culture in 1981 and the Lucerne Living Space Prize posthumously in 1998. The band name &quot;MetaLogue&quot; refers to Planzer&#x27;s penchant for wordplay and symbolises the symbiosis of the various elements that come together in this project. On the one hand, it is the young musicians who bring Planzer&#x27;s music into the light of the present and allow the audience to participate in a musical dialogue that takes place far away from the mainstream. On the other hand, it is the lyrics of singer Nina Reiter, who picks up on Planzer&#x27;s pioneering spirit in the synthesis of jazz and poetry, thus creating a meta-level to the previously instrumental compositions. On the occasion of the upcoming anniversary – Planzer would have celebrated his 85th birthday in 2024 – the Mani Planzer Big Band and the MorschAchBlasorCHester will pay tribute to the musical bridge-builder, trailblazer and pioneer with works arranged by Nina Reiter.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra

The art of jazz arranging has been around for 100 years. The Zurich Jazz Orchestra will trace the development of this art form for big band - a best-of program as a look back at our season theme The Art of Arranging. The journey begins in the 1920s, continues with the swing and big band era of the 1930s and 1940s and leads into the post-war period. Influential arrangers such as Bob Brookmeyer, Gil Evans, Carla Bley, Billy Strayhorn, George Gruntz and Mathias Rüegg will be in the spotlight and show how &quot;The Art of Arranging&quot; has developed over the past 50 years.

Caroline Chevin ft. Rose Ann Dimalanta

Two extraordinary musicians, whose paths have crossed again and again over the years, are fulfilling their wish to perform together for the first time: Caroline Chevin is known for her strong voice, her soulful songs that tell authentic stories. On top of this comes her top-class entertainment, with which she captivates every audience. Rose Ann Dimalanta, internationally sought-after pianist, singer and composer, known from her performances with Prince and in this country with Seven, commands the stage with her virtuoso playing. Her musical versatility makes her a fascinating artist. The collaboration between the two musicians promises a great musical synergy. They will play songs that have made them what they are today and tell each other stories from their musical lives. The two will be accompanied by the coriphiles Oli Keller on guitar and Jwan Steiner on drums.

Çiçek Taksi

Album Release «Bin Dilde»

Even if you don&#x27;t understand the lyrics, the music of Çiçek Taksi goes straight to the heart. The band, which the Turkish-Kurdish-Swiss singer Selin Dettwiler founded with three musician friends in Bern, dedicates its new album to the love of poetry; a love that knows no language barriers. Bin Dilde - in a thousand languages – is about love, repression, pain and hope, all woven into the songs. The Turkish poems that the band members collected as the basis for the songs were written by people living in Switzerland. They provide touching insights into arriving in an unknown place and tell of the very different circumstances that led to a departure to new homes in the writers&#x27; country of origin. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

BCUC

Bass Drum

BCUC stands for Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness. Their music is made up of indigenous funk, hip-hop and punk energy. But instead of trying to classify and analyze the music, you should simply visit a live show: An absolute stunner! In recent years, BCUC has played with legends such as Femi Kuti and Saul Williams, fascinated audiences at the most important European festivals (Glastonbury, Roskilde, Womad, Fusion, Sziget and many more) and also won the prestigious Womex Artist Award. And should anyone still have any doubts as to whether it&#x27;s worth it: “without a doubt the best live act I saw” - Gilles Peterson “Loved their set, it was one of my highlights of a great weekend” - Nick Dewey, Glastonbury Festival “guaranteed to touch untapped corners of your soul” - Okayafrica “the most impressive newcomers this year” - The Guardian It all started in a shipping container in Soweto, South Africa, where the band members of BCUC met. The shipping container was converted into a community restaurant and stands next to the church where Desmond Tutu organized the escape of the most wanted anti-apartheid activists. This historical background is echoed in BCUC&#x27;s music: Their music is a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon for political and spiritual liberation. The concert ticket is also valid for the party afterwards.

Raphael Jost Quintett

Singer and pianist Raphael Jost sees himself as a modern-day crooner. His songs are snapshots of his life, catchy and always cleverly packaged, and he never fails to surprise with his powerful, warm voice. At Moods, Jost will be presenting his newly formed quintet for the first time, as well as lots of new music, including fresh original compositions that have been created and matured over the past few months. Jost will be joined by Bastien Rieser on trumpet and Alex Hendriksen on tenor saxophone, Raphael Walser on double bass and London drummer Luke Tomlinson. The five musicians are united by their boundless joy of playing and their love of the jazz tradition.
